Cybersecurity Strategy on a Small Business Budget: Where to Actually Start

Most small business owners know they should "do something" about cybersecurity — then open a vendor website, see forty products with names like XDR-SOAR-NGAV, and close the tab. Here’s the truth the industry doesn’t lead with: for an SMB, the first 80% of protection comes from a short, ordered list of unglamorous moves.

Start with the doors, not the alarms

Attackers overwhelmingly get in through three doors: a stolen password, an unpatched system, or a person who clicked. Before buying any monitoring or "AI-powered" anything, close the doors: multi-factor authentication on every account that matters (email first), automatic updates turned on everywhere, and a password manager so your team stops reusing the same three passwords.

Then make yourself recoverable

Assume something eventually gets through. The difference between a bad week and a business-ending event is almost always backups: kept separate from your network, covering the systems you’d actually need to reopen tomorrow, and tested with a real restore at least twice a year. If you’ve never restore-tested, treat your backups as theoretical.

Only then, add eyes

With the doors locked and a way back, monitoring becomes worth paying for: endpoint detection (EDR) on your computers and someone — internal or a managed provider — actually watching it. This is where most SMBs jump first because it’s what gets marketed hardest, but detection without the basics is a smoke alarm in a house with no door locks.

• Week 1: MFA on email, banking and remote access; automatic updates on.
• Month 1: password manager rolled out; backups separated and restore-tested.
• Quarter 1: EDR deployed and monitored; staff phishing awareness started.
• Ongoing: review against the ACSC Essential Eight once a year.
